Anne Hultzsch

PD Dr Anne Hultzsch is an architectural historian and director of the ERC-funded group ‘Women Writing Architecture 1700-1900’ in the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), ETH Zurich. She trained first as an architect (TU Munich and La Sapienza, Rome), then as architectural historian (Bartlett, University College London). She holds a PhD in the History of Architecture from UCL (2011), was a postdoctoral fellow at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in the project ‘The Printed and the Built’ (2014-18) and obtained her habilitation at ETH Zurich (2022). She has researched and taught at ETH Zurich, the Bartlett, UCL, AHO Oslo, Queen Mary University of London, Greenwich University, and NYU London, among others. Her research has been funded by the ERC, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Society of Architectural Historians Great Britain, the Getty Research Institute, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, as well as the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Her research draws on intersectional feminism to study the reception and use of architectures and landscapes between ca. 1650 and 1930, focusing on gender, print cultures, and the histories of perception and travel. Author of Architecture, Travellers and Writers: Constructing Histories of Perception 1640-1950 (Legenda, 2014), Anne has contributed to many edited books and journals, including Architectural Histories, Journal18, The Journal of Architecture, Architecture and Culture, and others. She has edited Women Writing Architecture: Expanding Histories 1700-1900 (with Sol Pérez Martínez, gta Verlag, 2025), Women Making Space in the Andes 1400-1900 (with Sol Pérez Martínez, ABE, 2026), The Printed and the Built: Architecture, Print Culture, and Public Debate in the Nineteenth Century (with Mari Hvattum, 2018), and The Origins of the Architectural Magazine in Nineteenth-Century Europe (The Journal of Architecture, 2020). Currently, she is working on a monograph provisionally entitled Female Biography and Architecture, 1785–1842 (gta Verlag, forthcoming).
